The Rathbone Investment Process
Funds must evolve as they grow, and we have developed a thematic approach to help with this evolution, built around the central tenet of our investment process. It involves focusing on major global themes, understanding which industries are going to benefit from these themes, and identifying those individual businesses that offer the greatest leverage into these developments. However, our approach does not stifle stock-picking flair. A theme can lead us anywhere from UK micro-caps to global titans, and we can still invest in unique businesses that enjoy their own niche markets. Whilst this investment process underpins the management of all of our funds, the investment policies, and the combination of value and growth investment, are tailored to meet the specific objectives.
This philosophy is implemented through the Rathbone Investment Process, which combines top-down analysis with our renowned stock-picking abilities. As a team, we analyse the major economic, geopolitical and legislative drivers that influence the entire market - we want to understand the trends that govern the fortunes of the companies in which we invest. We then assess individual industries to determine those which will benefit or deteriorate under these forces. Finally, we look at stock-specific research within these industry sectors. It is this virtuous circle of analysis which eventually decides our individual stock selection.
